NARA Web-enabled Centers Information Processing System (CIPS)
The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) Centers Information Processing System (CIPS) was a legacy system that originally provided records to customers via network or dial-in modem. Customers without dial-in modems called, faxed or mailed written requests for records to NARA.
The AITC Web-enabled the existing application, giving it a graphical user interface with numerous benefits.
Benefits:
-
Access to records via any Web browser with basic Internet access
-
More efficient navigation than traditional mainframe applications
-
Secure access using current user registration methods in the Automated Customers Registration System (ACRS)
-
Consistency of use. Customers have one user ID and password for access to Web and mainframe applications.
The AITC can use this same Web-enabling technology to give any online mainframe application a graphical user interface (GUI).
